As we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, I invite you to remember those who matter most in your life. Christmas is not simply about the gifts we exchange, but about what we cherish, protect, and are willing to give.
In the gift of Jesus, God held nothing back. God gave what was most dear—an essential part of the Godhead, the Son. In love, God emptied Godself to restore us. Christmas, then, is a powerful reminder that we, too, are called to empty ourselves for one another—not only for those who are easy to love or who seem deserving, but for all people and for all of God’s creation. Everyone and everything God brings in our lives matter.
This Christmas, I invite you to do something new—something courageous. Surprise someone with your unconditional love. Offer forgiveness where there has been hurt. Release a grudge you have carried for too long. Do not wait for gratitude or repayment—for what did God receive in return for giving us a Savior? Nothing.
You are God’s beloved child—so precious that Jesus was born for your salvation. This Christmas, imitate God. Give love freely. Extend forgiveness generously. Let hosanna rise in every human heart, for God is with us—Emmanuel.
Yet, as we rejoice, let us not forget that Christmas also reminds us of the human cost that accompanied the birth of our Savior. Innocent children’s lives were lost due to human arrogance. Even today, many families experience this season through tears—beloved ones are missing from their tables due to wars, immigration raids, and other calamities. We are called to be present for them as well, remembering that the joy of Christmas does not erase human suffering. Today we celebrate Christmas in our common vulnerability, trusting that God is with us in all circumstances.
May the peace of Christ surround you and those you love.
Merry Christmas.
