Have you ever wondered what Jesus would look like if he walked our streets today? Would he be dressed in an expensive suit, working in one of the most prestigious buildings downtown? Would he be working in a café or supermarket? Or would he be that homeless woman? I have wondered too if Jesus would be that person standing by the bus stop, smiling at strangers and occasionally attending AA meetings. Who do you think he would be? Take a moment to think.
You know, Jesus did not make sense to his opponents when he walked the streets. This was because he did not fit their image of a holy man. In fact, according to many traditions, he was rarely seen as one. He was a “good” man and a “good” teacher, yet he did not always do or behave in ways that people considered “good.” He challenged social norms. He broke what many regarded as “normal” in order to be accessible to everyone. He saw the possibility of a new world in every situation—that is, he did not see society as fixed or unchangeable.
This is what we pray for when we say, “Thy kingdom come”—asking God to bring new possibilities into ordinary circumstances. For Jesus, light could break into darkness at any moment if we were open to God’s leading.
It is for this reason that he chose to take risks—to become vulnerable to all people, regardless of their social, ethnic, or religious identity. It is to this ministry that we are all invited–to become vulnerable servants to others. So, if Jesus were walking our streets today, he might be a simple man knocking on every door, walking every street, and riding every bus, speaking about what matters most—love for God and love for one another.
Today, be like Jesus to all those you meet. Try to see Jesus all around you. May his humility give you the courage to be Christ to others in the world today.
